    Computer Science programs at the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science in Opole University

    The Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science runs four programs in the field of computer science, two undergraduate and two graduate ones.

    The undergraduate (first cycle) programs take either three or three and a half years and the graduates obtain the Licentiate*) of computer science or, respectively, ‘Inżynier’ of computer science degree.

    The graduate Master’s programs take either two-years or one and a half years (for candidates with the ‘Inżynier’ degree) and the graduates obtain the degree of Master's of Computer Science.

    *) In Poland, the Licentiate degree corresponds to the Bachelor's degree

    Licentiate program

    Students of the undergraduate program can select (after the first semester) one of the following specializations:
    • databases (DB),
    • computer graphics (CG),
    • computer networks and systems (CNS).

    The requirements to obtain the Licentiate degree are:

    • accumulating at least 180 ECTS (credit) points;
      • among those 91 ECTS points are credited for all the mandatory core courses,
      • at least 58 ECTS points credited for all the elective specialty courses, seminars and an appropriate internship;
    • writing a thesis and passing a Licentiate diploma examination – 10 ECTS points.

    Graduation requirements for all specializations:

    Each student is required to complete all mandatory courses and the required number of elective courses as specified in the study program which complies with the graduation requirements for undergraduate computer science studies as described in the ministerial regulation dated July 12, 2007 (Dz. U. z 2007, Nr 164, poz. 1164, annex 45).

    Professional standards:

    Each graduate of the program is qualified to work for IT companies that construct, implement or provide maintenance of IT tools and systems and for other companies that use such tools and systems, particularly in their chosen specializations.

    Inżynier-program

    Students of the undergraduate three and a half years program can select (after the first semester) one of the following specializations:
    • databases (DB),
    • computer graphics (CG),
    • computer networks and systems (CNS).

    The requirements to obtain the Inżynier degree are:

    • accumulating at least 210 ECTS (credit) points;
      • among those 108 ECTS points are credited for all the mandatory core courses,
      • at least 87 ECTS points credited for all the elective specialty courses, seminars and an appropriate internship;
    • writing a thesis and passing an Inżynier diploma examination – 15 ECTS points.

    Graduation requirements for all specializations:

    Each student is required to complete all mandatory courses and the required number of elective courses as specified in the study program which complies with the graduation requirements for undergraduate computer science studies as described in the ministerial regulation dated July 12, 2007 (Dz. U. z 2007, Nr 164, poz. 1164, annex 45).

    Professional standards:

    Each graduate of the program is qualified to work for IT companies that construct, implement or provide maintenance of IT tools and systems and for other companies that use such tools and systems, particularly in their chosen specializations.

    Master's program

    Students of the graduate program can select one of the following specializations:
    • Internet engineering (IE),
    • computational statistics (CS).

    The requirements to obtain the Master's degree in the two-year program are:

    • accumulating at least 120 ECTS (credit) points;
      • among those 58 ECTS points are credited for all the mandatory core courses,
      • at least 42 ECTS points credited for all the elective specialty courses and seminars;
    • writing a Master's thesis and passing a diploma examination – 20 ECTS points.

    The requirements to obtain the Master's degree in the one-and-a-half-year program are:

    • accumulating at least 90 ECTS (credit) points;
      • among those 33 ECTS points are credited for all the mandatory core courses,
      • at least 37 ECTS points credited for all the elective specialty courses and seminars;
    • writing a Master's thesis and passing a diploma examination – 20 ECTS points.

    Graduation requirements for all specializations:

    Each student is required to complete all mandatory courses and the required number of elective courses as specified in the study program which complies with the graduation requirements for Master's program in computer science as described in the ministerial regulation dated July 12, 2007 (Dz. U. z 2007, Nr 164, poz. 1164, annex 45).

    Professional standards:

    Each graduate is expected:

    1. To have a thorough knowledge of principal computer science areas and an extended knowledge of their selected specialization;

    2. To solve informatics problems and to give opinions, even those based on incomplete or limited information while complying legal and ethical principles.

    Mathematics programs at the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science in Opole University

    The Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science runs two programs in the field of mathematics.

    The first one is a three-year undergraduate (first cycle) Licentiate program, whose graduates obtain the Licentiate*) of Mathematics degree.

    The second one is a two-year graduate Master's program, whose graduates obtain the degree of Master's of Mathematics.

    *) In Poland, the Licentiate degree corresponds to the Bachelor's degree

    • financial mathematics (FM),
    • applied mathematics (AM),
    • mathematical modeling and data analysis (MMDA),
    • didactic mathematics (DM).

    The requirements to obtain the Licentiate degree are:

    • accumulating at least 180 ECTS (credit) points;
      • among those 91 ECTS points are credited for all the mandatory core courses,
      • at least 58 ECTS points credited for all the elective specialty courses, seminars and an appropriate internship;
    • writing a thesis and passing a Licentiate diploma examination – 10 ECTS points.

    Graduation requirements for all specializations:

    Each student is required to complete all mandatory courses and the required number of elective courses as specified in the study program which complies with the graduation requirements for undergraduate mathematics studies as described in the ministerial regulation dated July 12, 2007 (Dz. U. z 2007, Nr 164, poz. 1164, annex 64).

    Professional standards for FM, AM and MMDA specializations:

    Each graduate of the program is qualified to occupy professional positions that require the knowledge of mathematical methods and their applications, particularly in their chosen specializations: in finance, insurance companies, trade and industrial companies, and in consulting firms.

    Professional standards for DM specialization:

    The graduates are qualified to teach mathematics, as their main specialization, and informatics, as their additional specialization, in elementary and junior high schools (compliant with the ministerial regulation dated Sept. 7. 2004 (Dz. U. z 2004, Nr 207, poz. 2110).


    Master's program

    Students of the graduate program can select one of the following specializations:
    • financial mathematics (FM),
    • applied mathematics (AM),
    • mathematical modeling and data analysis (MMDA),
    • theoretical mathematics (TM)
    • didactic mathematics (DM).

    The requirements to obtain the Master's degree are:

    • accumulating at least 120 ECTS (credit) points;
      • among those 53 ECTS points are credited for all the mandatory core courses,
      • at least 39 ECTS points credited for all the elective specialty courses and seminars;
    • writing a Master's thesis and passing a diploma examination – 20 ECTS points.

    Graduation requirements for all specializations:

    Each student is required to complete all mandatory courses and the required number of elective courses as specified in the study program which complies with the graduation requirements for Master's program in mathematics as described in the ministerial regulation dated July 12, 2007 (Dz. U. z 2007, Nr 164, poz. 1164, annex 64).

    Professional standards for FM, AM, MMDA and TM specializations:

    Each graduate is expected:

    1. To have a thorough knowledge of principal mathematical areas and an extended knowledge of their selected specialization;

    2. To possess professional skills in areas where logical, analytical and algorithmic thinking, and problem solving capabilities are required.

    Professional standards for DM specialization:

    The graduates are qualified to teach mathematics in elementary, junior and senior high schools (compliant with the ministerial regulation dated Sept. 7. 2004 (Dz. U. z 2004, Nr 207, poz. 2110).
